Ole Miss better win
The frustrating thing about all the Lane Kiffin speculation is that it’s all just that - speculation.
Nobody really knows if Auburn athletic director John Cohen wants or has offered Kiffin.
Nobody knows if Kiffin would want the job.
It’s possible that Kiffin doesn’t even know if he would want the job.
It’s the not knowing that’s driving Ole Miss fans crazy.
The blowout loss to Arkansas didn’t help either.
Whether it’s fair or not, some of us blame the terrible performance at Arkansas on Kiffin allowing the Auburn talk to distract the team.
We want Kiffin to end the speculation by making an affirmative statement that he intends to stay so as to avoid a repeat performance in the Egg Bowl.
For reasons only Kiffin knows he refuses to do that. One can only assume that Kiffin wants to keep his options open after the conclusion of the the game on Thursday night. That’s certainly his right although it isn’t exactly endearing.
Maybe he just wants to leverage the best offer he can get from Ole Miss, or maybe he really does want to go to Auburn.
We just don’t know, but we will know soon enough.
The Egg Bowl is two days away.
If Ole Miss beats Mississippi State on Thanksgiving night and Kiffin leaves the next day for Auburn that will definitely be a kick in the you know what.
If Ole Miss beats State and Kiffin decides to stay in Oxford all will be forgiven. Winning the Egg Bowl has that effect.
BUT if Ole Miss loses to State on Thanksgiving night Kiffin better hope he gets that job at Auburn because Ole Miss fans aren’t going to be in any hurry to forgive a guy that got boat raced by a bad Arkansas team and then left them flapping in the wind for a week before losing the worst game an Ole Miss coach can lose.
Would Auburn even want Kiffin if Ole Miss loses three straight games to end the season?
Ole Miss better win.
